Q. How do I get a personal Web page?

A. Ten megabytes of space for your personal, non-commercial Web page is included with your Full Access Solution account. All you must do is build the page and place it on our server so that it can be accessed by users all over the Internet.

Q. How do I make a Web page?

A. There are several ways to make Web pages; however, some require more computing knowledge than others. Here is a short description of some of those options:

  • You can code the page manually using HTML (HyperText Markup Language). This method is the most difficult for beginners, but it allows you full control over the content and appearance of your page.
  • You can convert a word processor document from many of the newest versions of the most popular word processing programs, including Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect.
  • You can use a program included with various Web browsers to construct pages. These include Microsoft FrontPage Express (an add-on for Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0) and Netscape Composer (included with Netscape Communicator).
  • You can buy an additional program to construct the pages. A good listing of these is available at this TUCOWS site.

Q. I have my Web page made, but how can other people see it?

A. For your page to be accessible to the world, you'll need to put it on www2.netdoor.com, Netdoor's personal Web page server. To get there, use an FTP client to FTP to www2.netdoor.com. Your username and password are the same that you use when you dialup or check your e-mail. Once you get logged in, place your files in the root directory (which is represented by a forward slash) and they will immediately be visible to the world. The URL for your page will be http://www2.netdoor.com/~username/. Be sure to replace username with your Netdoor username.

Q. How much space do I have for my Webpage?

A. You have 10 megabytes of space on our Web server. This should be enough space to publish a considerable number of Web pages with images, as each Web page is generally under 15 KB.

Q. How can I get a counter on my Webpage?

A. Netdoor provides a free counter for all pages hosted on its personal Web server. To receive instructions on installing it, click here.

Q. Can I get a guestbook on my Webpage?

A. Sure! Follow the instructions on this page.

Q. How do I make a form for people to fill out when they come to my site?

A. Just follow the directions here.

Q. Can I write a CGI program and use it on your server?

A. Sure! Be sure that it obeys the conventions shown on our CGI information page.

Q. When I go to http://www2.netdoor.com/~myusername/, my page doesn't come up. Instead, I see a list of pages in my directory. What's wrong?

A. Be sure that the page you want to be your main page is named index.html. Whatever is called index.html will be seen as your default page.

Q. I don't know and don't want to learn HTML. Can you build my page for me?

A. Sure, but be aware that charges start at $85 per hour for this service. Contact sales@netdoor.com if you are interested.

Q. What is this message I just received about my page violating the Acceptable Use Policy?

A. If you have received this message, one of our staff has noticed that your personal Web site is in violation of our Acceptable Use Policy that prohibits personal Web pages from containing information that is commercial advertisement, direct or indirect promotion of an organization, or selling of goods or services not deemed personal in nature. If you need services of that nature, you must purchase a commercial Web account that allows the distribution of such content.

Q. I can't figure out <insert Web problem here>. Can you help me?

A. Due to the large number of requests for help with Web sites and the limited amount of support staff available, we regret that we cannot provide support for personal Web sites. However, we do offer online help at http://support.netdoor.com/web/ to assist you as you create your site.
