Internet Security

  • Viruses
  • - Viruses have grown to become the #1 security risk for any user of the Internet. Below are steps on how to protect your computer from becoming infected with a virus.

  1. Anti virus software. This is very important. Every user of the Internet should have some form of anti virus software. Two of the most popular software titles are Norton and McAfee.

If you do not have any anti virus software installed and believe that you may have a virus, there are free online virus scanners available.

    1. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - This will scan for viruses.
    2. http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp - This will scan and advise you on how to remove any viruses it may find.

  2. Common sense. This is your best tool against viruses.
    • Do not open attachments unless you are aware of them. If you do not know the sender, there is a high chance that the attachment is a virus.
    • Do not install software unless you are sure that it is virus free. Software can be scanned with anti virus software before it is installed. Refer to your anti virus software's manual for more information.
    • Update your system weekly. This includes going to Windows Update, as well as updating anti virus software and spyware removal software.
    • If you think that you may be infected with a virus, do not connect to the Internet. Contact a computer technician or your computer manufacturer for assistance.
